Five point someone - What not to do at IIT

This was the novel that made Chetan Bhagat IIT Delhi graduate who is also alumunus of IIM Ahmedabad a big name in the filed of literture. Five point someone - what not to do at IIT was the first novel writeen by Chetan Bhagat and its the highest selling Indian novel written in English and bestseller of 2007.

The novel is set in IIT Delhi(1991 to 1995) and is about the life of three mechanical engineering students(and people around them). Three students are:
Hari Kumar (the narrator)
Ryan Oberoi
Alok Gupta

All three fail to cope up with the cruel grading system of the IITs where teacher ask them to go for markes not for creativty. The friends were known as five pointers due to their perennially low 5.something GPA's.

The whole story is narrated by Hari, with some small passages by his friends Ryan and Alok, as well as a letter by Hari's girlfriend Neha Cherian. Along with the three firends fling to make IIT Delhi the best college in engineering novel also features Hari's love affair with Neha who daughter of Prof. Cherian, HOD, Mechanical Engineering Department.

Novel five point something was adapted into a play by the theatre group Madras Players and a bollywood movie named 3 Idiots also made on the novel.

The Magic And The Madness - Michael Jackson Biography

Micheal Jackson was the real king of the pop and no one will be able to repeat the sucess he had in his life. He left us on June this year however his craze was still at his best as the famous concert he was goin to do for his comback has all the tickets sold well in advance.

I recently got to read biography of great Micheal Jackson and this book by J. Randy Taraborrelli is a perfect one to read for any MJ fan.

About the book:
Title: Michael Jackson (The Magic And The Madness)
Publishers: Pan Macmillan Ltd
Author: J. Randy Taraborrelli

The first few chapters of the book covered childhood and Motown years of Michael Jackson are not only wel written but also things that have not been publsihed by hundreds of MJ biographies published so far. Book is thoroughly researched and well written. It reflects Michael's relationships with his fans, friends and family accurately. I found his interaction with with his father fascinating. The 700 pages book brings into light various aspects of MJ's life like his company, romantic life etc. Thus book is not really about music and lifestyle of a famous rich man its more than that and trust me anyone who thinks that wealth leads to happiness will surely realise that life is not like that.

The Winner Stands Alone - Paulo Coelho

The Winner Stands Alone
by Paulo Coelho
Harper Collins.
Pages 375. Rs 325.

It starts early, the urge to win; not to just do something, but to excel, more so at the cost of others who are also trying to do the same. Winning often gets you a prize, but it always comes at a price…you set higher goals, and in the process, you become more focused, sacrifice more…all for attaining the elusive. Is it worth it? Not really, says the person famous for pushing as the ideal the notion that “We should be what we always wanted to be,” and that we should follow our dream.

The Winner Stands Alone, says the title of this latest book of the bestselling author, Paulo Coelho, which has been translated from Portuguese by Margaret Jull Costa. The Brazilian author writes in Portuguese, though he is comfortable with English and French, too. Coelho’s writings have been translated into 68 languages and 455 translations of his works have been published with sales totaling around 100 million copies worldwide.

The setting of his latest novel is the Cannes film festival. The protagonist is Igor, a Russian who survived the war in Afghanistan, but carries scars from these encounters. He wins in business, too, setting up and successfully running a mobile phone company, but that victory comes at the cost of losing his wife, Ewa, who is driven away by the demons that reveal themselves through the successive layers of success that Igor builds for himself.

No Coelho fan would be satisfied with a plain thriller, and this book is certainly not one. It is also a strong critique of Cannes. He lays bare the emptiness behind the glittering facade of high fashion and entertainment, the way in which handlers chip away at a person’s identity, and how success corrupts the soul.

Igor is at Cannes to win over his former wife, who has, in the meantime, married Hamid, a fashion magnate. Hamid, Igor and Ewa, a successful businesswoman in her own right, are all powerful and wealthy people who act as patrons. Coelho uses the term “Superclass” to describe them, they are courted, envied and emulated, and they set the pattern of what the rest of the world follows.

The three main characters have humble beginnings, have made it big compromising themselves in various ways in the process, and now are at a stage where their worlds, distinct spheres of influence, are full of people who are willing to bend and concur with everything they say just to be in and to be seen in the proximity of this “Superclass”.

Ironically, Hamid is the son of an Arab merchant who gained the respect of his Sheikh by not giving in the to the ruler’s modernization drive. The Sheikh now finances Hamid, who is in Cannes to look for a supermodel to be the “face” of his successful fashion line, and for an actress to star in the movie that he is producing.

Gabriela, who is desperate for her first big break, is selected to star in the new movie, and at the cusp of success, is “handled” by her minders. Here, Coelho plays an contrasts, her Cinderella fantasies rudely jarred by androgynous creature who tells her to undress, and “take your bra off too, it makes bulges under the dress.” The first causality at the doorstep of her success in her privacy and dignity, as she becomes an object.

Stripped of her clothes, with just her knickers on, she is lead to a hairdresser who, talking to himself, says: “when you go up the steps, they are not looking at you, you know. They are looking at my work, at my make-up, at my hair styling. You are just the canvas on which I paint or draw, the clay out of which I make my sculptures.” He then goes on to betray his insecurities: “If I make a mistake, what will people say? I could lose my job.”

Cannes is where the dreamers come to be moulded by the dream makers, Coelho looks at the Cannes beyond the razzmatazz, and his knowledge is detailed, through the picture that he paints turns out to be depressing. The three members of the “superclass” becomes victims of each other, while the aspirants are depicted as pawns, though the one person who stands out in Jasmine, a new model with an electrifying presence who manages to hold on to what she wants in life.

As you see the world of manipulators, their puppets and the show that they put up for the world at large, you do wonder what the world was like before all that. Aspiration for that which is materially tangible, placing values not on the “real” intrinsic worth but on perceived surface qualities, being caught in the trappings of success even at the cost of being lonely at the top –all these are facets that bring colour to our lives.

While none argues that they should be ends in themselves, they are makers of success, made all the more meaningful when you have a family and friends to share it with. Success is within, not outside the self, just as the real you is within, not in the labels you wear and the accessories that you have, or in ho others place you in their pecking order.

As Coehlo says in his blog : “We are part of the solution, if we go back to the real values of life, being “follow your dream” the most important of all. Not the dreams of our parents, or our partners. We should be what we always wanted to be.”

Latest books release and overview

Bat-ball book
THE NEWS is that cricket is back in our lives. With the Sri Lanka tour turning out to be a breeze , it makes perfect sense to keep The Cricinfo Guide to International Cricket 2009 (Penguin, Rs.350) handy. Apart from giving a detailed lowdown of pretty much all international players in the playing ground, it has laid down stats at your disposal. Edited by Steven Lynch, the guide also gives you those pop quiz answers (Who hit the first ball he received in international cricket for six?). Just don’t depend on the international schedule at the end. Contemporary cricket – in the contemporary world – keeps shifting schedules. But that apart, a healthy reckoner for the cricket nut.

Forbidden fruits
IT’S ONE thing to keep moping about how every second Indian is slighted by some act or display that seems to ‘hurt his sensibilities’. It’s quite another to investigate how we came to be like this. Girja kumar does exactly this by tracking key cases in Censorship in India (Har-Anand, Rs.495). Interestingly, as the subtitle, ‘Studies in fundamentalism, obscenity and law’, hint’s at, it is government (over-enthusiasm) that makes things easy for foam-in-the-mouthers. The second half of the book correctly avoids the ‘one man’s freedom of action is another man’s obscenity’ (mostly pertaining to women, actually) line. Instead, the author moulds the idea of ‘obscenity’ by exploring judicial judgements in India and abroad.

School’s up
IT WAS an idea waiting to be turned into a book-considering everyone starts looking dreamily into the distance while talking about their ‘good ole school days’. Recess: The Penguin Book of Schooldays (Rs.450) taps into that soft, mushy spot. Edited deftly and creatively by Palash Krishna Mehrotra, the anthology contains extracts from the writings of Ismat Chugtai, Rohinton Mistry, P.T.Usha, Amit Chaudhuri, Satyajit Ray, Premchand, Jawaharlal Nehru, Vikram Seth and Harivansh Rai Bachchan. Irreverence and nostalgia are lined up one after the other in honour of when grown-ups were not grown-ups and were under the thrall of people who made the rules. Delightful collection.

Spiritual hip hop
THIS BOOK should be a backpacker’s delight. It spirals in unpredictable directions as it follows its free-spirited and soul-searching protagonist. A Grasshopper’s Pilgrimage (Rupa, Rs.150), is host to a mighty spiritual bunch-sufi babas, smoking hippies, freedom fighters and foreigners without visas. It also has a woman whose ‘inner journey’ begins as she circles the feet of her beloved mountain. Gopika is single, pretty and a spiritual seeker. While working for a television channel in Mumbai, she hears an inner call. Like a grasshopper, she flits from guru to guru, from prospective groom to boyfriend. Why jump about so much? Ah, therein hangs the tale.
